Honda CBR engines — inline-four racing DNA from CBR500RA to Fireblade SP
The Honda CBR family ranges from the uncompromising CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP (217 hp, 1000 cc inline-four, Öhlins NPX Smart EC 2.0) through the mid-range CBR600RR (121 hp, 599 cc, MotoGP IMU) and the sporty CBR650R E-Clutch (95 hp, 649 cc four-cylinder) to the A2-compliant CBR500RA (47 hp, 471 cc twin). Every one of these CBR motorcycles carries the Honda Wing badge and comes out of the HRC engineering programme.
The Fireblade SP is based directly on the RC213V MotoGP race bike: aluminium twin-spar frame, longer swingarm for more traction, winglets for aerodynamic downforce. Brembo Stylema brake calipers with a radial master cylinder, a 200/55-17 rear tyre and throttle-by-wire with dual-motor control deliver absolute precision.

CBR cockpit, 6-axis IMU & electronics suite — racing technology for the road
All CBR CBR models feature a modern 5" TFT cockpit with Bluetooth connectivity (CBR1000RR-R + CBR650R + CBR500RA E-Clutch) and smartphone pairing. The Fireblade SP displays MotoGP data layers, lean angle, brake pressure and wheelie control levels in real time. The CBR600RR takes its 6-axis IMU straight from the RC213V-S and delivers 9-level HSTC torque control, wheelie control, rear-lift control and cornering ABS.
The Honda E-Clutch on the CBR650R and CBR500RA takes over clutch operation automatically when pulling away, shifting and stopping — beginners and A2 riders benefit from jerk-free gear changes without losing the sporting character. The Fireblade SP's quickshifter allows clutchless up- and downshifts under full load.
Honda E-Clutch — riding the CBR650R and CBR500R without a clutch lever
The Honda E-Clutch is an electronically controlled clutch that takes over the clutch work without removing the hand lever. Pulling away, shifting and stopping all work without the clutch lever – and whoever wants to can still operate it manually at any time. Honda offers the E-Clutch on the Honda CBR 650 R (CBR650R) and the Honda CBR 500 R (CBR500R).
Honda E-Clutch explained: how does it work?
Two small electric motors operate the clutch within milliseconds. Sensors register engine speed, gear, throttle position and the force on the shift lever. The system decides how quickly the clutch closes – gently when pulling away, hard and fast when shifting up under load. Unlike a quickshifter, which only interrupts the load on the gearshift, the E-Clutch works across the entire rev range and when coming to a stop.
Honda E-Clutch experience in practice
The biggest relief shows in city traffic: no clutch at the lights, no stalling when pulling away on a hill. On winding roads the left hand stays free for the line instead of the lever. Anyone who wants to ride conventionally simply pulls the clutch – the system steps back and rejoins automatically afterwards.
Honda E-Clutch models and price
Among the Honda CBR models the E-Clutch is available for the Honda CBR 650 R and the Honda CBR 500 R. The surcharge over the model with a conventional clutch is moderate; the additional weight is around two kilograms. The system cannot be retrofitted – it is fitted at the factory. E-Clutch or quickshifter — what is the difference?
A quickshifter allows clutchless up and down shifts while riding, but replaces neither pulling away nor stopping. The E-Clutch covers both. The Honda CBR 1000 RR-R Fireblade SP and the Honda CBR 600 RR come with a quickshifter, the Honda CBR 650 R and the Honda CBR 500 R optionally with E-Clutch. Which solution fits better depends on use: track and trackday favour the quickshifter, everyday riding and mountain roads the E-Clutch.

Akrapovic exhaust systems for the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP & CBR600RR
The Akrapovic Race Line full titanium system is the best-selling tuning option for the Fireblade SP: around 4 kg weight saving, a fuller soundtrack and 5-8 hp more power in the upper rev range. The Fireblade SP weighs 201 kg ready to ride including a full tank (16.1 L), oil and coolant. That makes it lighter than the BMW S1000RR (202 kg) and Yamaha R1M (202 kg), but slightly heavier than the BMW M1000RR (192 kg) and Ducati Panigale V4S (198 kg). Dry weight without fluids is around 178 kg.
The Fireblade SP and CBR600RR require the unrestricted A licence. The CBR650R and CBR650R E-Clutch can be restricted to 35 kW and ridden on an A2 licence (adjustable by the Honda dealer via the electronic engine control unit). All Honda CBR models are road legal and homologated for road use. That said, the riding position on the Fireblade SP and CBR600RR in particular is aggressively sporty — longer city rides or tours over 200 km can become tiring. The most important circuits and trackday venues for Swiss Honda riders are Anneau du Rhin (Alsace), Lédenon (southern France), Mugello (Italy), Misano (Italy) and Vairano (Italy). The most popular tuning option for the racetrack is the Akrapovic Race Line full system in titanium: around 4 kg weight saving, a fuller soundtrack and 5-8 hp more power in the upper rev range (not road legal, trackday only). The Akrapovic slip-on in titanium is road legal and offers a similar sound with a smaller performance gain. Both are available at Honda Motorrad Zürich including fitting and registration.
Honda offers complete factory HRC Track Packs: front and rear frame sliders, swingarm protector, drive chain guard, tank protector, Alcantara rider seat, tall tinted screen, wheel rim decals, pillion seat cowl in red or black and an aluminium oil filler cap. Racetracks for motorcycles in Switzerland are a short list – trackdays usually take place just across the border, for example at Anneau du Rhin, Hockenheim, Most or Mugello. For a safe start we recommend riding technique training beforehand; we are happy to arrange courses and dates.
They solve different tasks. The quickshifter allows clutchless shifting while riding and is fitted to the Honda Fireblade CBR1000RR and the Honda CBR 600 RR.
