A supermoto is an off-road motorcycle converted for the road: long-travel suspension and a high seating position like a motocrosser, combined with 17-inch wheels on road tyres and a large front brake disc. The result is a bike that comes into its own on tight mountain roads and on the kart track - light, agile and with very direct steering.
The term supermotard comes from France and describes the same type of machine. In Switzerland both names are in common use; either way it means an enduro chassis on road wheels.

What makes a supermoto a supermoto
17 inch instead of 21/18: road wheels turn a motocrosser into a supermotard.
The class was born in racing: off-road machines were fitted with road wheels and sent onto tarmac circuits. What remains is the mix that still defines a supermoto today - a motocross chassis with plenty of travel, 17-inch wheels, road tyres and a powerful single front brake disc.
Wheels and tyres: 17 inch front and rear instead of 21/18 on a crosser - this lowers the bike and sharpens the steering
Brake: a much larger front disc, because stopping on tarmac is a different job than in sand
Suspension: firmer settings so the bike does not dive under hard braking
Gearing: taller than off road, matched to higher speeds
In everyday Swiss use the bike is simply called a supermoto, and the spelling super motard means exactly the same type of machine. In the end the name matters less than the base: which chassis, which gearing and which brake setup suit your riding is something we work out with you.
Supermoto conversion - from motocrosser to supermotard

A supermoto conversion starts with the wheels and ends with road registration. If you want to convert an off-road machine, clarify these points first:
Supermoto wheels: a 17-inch set with matching hubs, spokes and brake disc mount
Supermoto tyres: road compound, sporty or with a wet-weather tread depending on use
Brake system: larger front disc, often with an adapter for the caliper
Suspension: springs and damping matched to the new use and to your weight
Registration: road use requires lights, mirrors, a horn, a plate holder and approval by the road traffic office
Which parts fit your machine and what the inspection requires is something we go through with you before the conversion - so there are no surprises at the test. The work is done by our motorcycle workshop.

A supermoto 125 is how many riders start: light, easy to handle and legal from the age of 16 with category A1. Honda does not build a 125 supermoto ex works - the base is a 125 enduro or motocross machine converted to 17-inch wheels with road tyres. The same route as on the bigger bikes, one class lower.

Supermoto service, maintenance and parts
Chain, brakes and tyres wear faster on tarmac - service after every hard session.
A supermotard gets worked hard on tarmac - brakes, tyres and chain wear faster than on a touring bike. In our workshop we take care of supermoto service and maintenance: oil changes, valve clearance, brakes, chain kit, tyre changes and suspension setup. Spare parts for the Honda CRF range are ordered at short notice. The matching motorcycle clothing and protective gear is available from us as well.
Road registration includes the Swiss MFK inspection: we prepare your supermoto for it so that lights, brakes, tyres and noise levels are right first time. If you want to get a feel for the bike before buying, arrange a test ride - the fee is credited against the purchase.

Supermoto, motocross or enduro - which is which?
The three types look similar but each has a clear purpose:
Supermoto: tarmac, kart tracks and twisty roads - road legal when registered
Motocross: closed circuits off road, no road registration
Enduro: open terrain and forest tracks, road legal depending on the model
Trial: walking pace over obstacles - technique instead of speed, without a seat

Supermotard technique - MX Academy
Anyone who has watched a good supermoto rider knows straight away where the style comes from: leg out, rear wheel sideways into the corner, eyes far ahead. That is motocross technique on tarmac - which is exactly why supermotard riding is learned fastest where it started: off road.
The MX Academy is the largest motocross and enduro school in Europe. Training takes place on the site in Schlatt TG, listed as a NASAK sports facility in the federal inventory of Swiss Olympic.

What is the difference between a supermoto and a supermotard?
None - both terms describe the same type of machine. Supermotard is the French name, supermoto the one used internationally.
Is a supermoto road legal?
A supermoto can be registered if lights, mirrors, a horn and a plate holder are fitted and the road traffic office approves the conversion. A pure motocross bike, by contrast, is never road legal.
Which wheels does a supermoto conversion need?
17 inch front and rear with road tyres, matching hubs and a mount for the larger brake disc. The wheel set is the core of every supermoto conversion.
Which licence do I need for a supermoto?
Capacity and power decide, as with any motorcycle. Most supermoto machines fall into category A; smaller models can also be ridden on the restricted A2 licence.
Can I convert my motocross bike into a supermoto?
Technically yes - wheels, brake, suspension and gearing have to be adapted. Whether the machine can then be registered depends on the model. Clarify that with us before you order parts.

How often does a supermotard need a service?
